About Orwell, Vermont

In July 1776, the American army began fortifying Mount Independence in Orwell to stop a British invasion. Work went on through the winter and spring. The Americans pulled out on July 5 and 6, 1777. Hessian and British soldiers then held the site until November 1777.

After the Revolution, Mount Independence became farmland for sheep and cattle. Today the state runs it as a historic site, and it became a National Historic Landmark in 1972. Some call it the least disturbed major site of the Revolutionary War in the nation.

  • A relic found in the lakeUnderwater archaeologists raised a cannon from the lake that was cast in Scotland in 1690. It weighs 3,000 pounds. It is now shown in the museum at Mount Independence, along with timbers from the Great Bridge.
