About Ossipee, New Hampshire

Ossipee is a town of 4,372 people and the seat of Carroll County, set between the Ossipee Mountains and Ossipee Lake. Early names for the place were Wigwam Village and later New Garden. Its final name comes from the Ossipee, an Algonquian tribe that kept a stockade fort here against the Mohawks to the west. In 1725 Captain John Lovewell's men built a large fort of their own on the site, and the legislature made Ossipee a town on February 22, 1785.

Farmers grazed animals and grew wheat and potatoes on the rocky ground, and the town shipped produce, lumber and cattle. By 1859, with 2,123 people, it ran twelve sawmills, five gristmills, four tanneries and a paper mill, along with other shops. Trains of the Portsmouth, Great Falls and Conway Railroad came to Ossipee Corner in 1871, then pushed on to Center Ossipee in 1875, bringing trade and summer visitors who made the town a resort. Passenger trains stopped in 1961 and freight trains in 1972.

  • A courthouse from 1916Carroll County was formed in 1840, and the courthouse built in Ossipee the year before became the county's courthouse. In 1916 the Carroll County Court House replaced it on the same ground, a brick building with limestone trim designed by Albert H. Dow, a Tuftonboro native working in Boston. The county offices moved out in 1979, the courts followed in 2004, and the building is now in the care of the Ossipee Historical Society.
  • The first Free Will Baptist churchThe Early Settlers Meeting House went up at Leighton Corners between 1809 and 1812 as the town's first Free Will Baptist church. The congregation divided in the 1850s, and those who stayed remodeled the building with bench pews and two front doors. The Ossipee Historical Society bought it in 1928.
  • The Great BridgeBridges crossed the Bearcamp River here as early as 1792, at a spot locals called the Great Bridge. A flood knocked the old one loose in 1869, and Henry Banks, keeper of the West Ossipee Hotel, had the Whittier Bridge built in 1870.
  • Named for a summer guestThe Whittier Bridge honors John Greenleaf Whittier, who spent summers at Banks's hotel in the 1870s. The 137-foot covered bridge was lifted off for restoration in 2008 and set back in December 2022, now open to people on foot.
  • A Model T on runnersIn 1917 Virgil D. White started building a kit that converted a Ford Model T into a machine he named a snowmobile, and he copyrighted the word. He filed for a patent in 1918, and by 1922 Ford dealers were selling the kit for about $395. Ossipee calls itself the home of the first snowmobile.
