About Oxford, Adams County, Pennsylvania

Oxford is a community of 5,936 people in Adams County, Pennsylvania, as counted in the 2020 census. Its Catholic history reaches back to 1730, when Jesuits founded a mission on land four miles south of New Oxford, and the congregation they gathered there went on to build a chapel of its own.

  • A Jesuit chapel from 1787The mission's members finished their Jesuit chapel in 1787, and the building still holds services today. A Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission marker counts it among the oldest chapels in the United States.
  • Pennsylvania's first Sacred Heart churchThe same state marker records that the Oxford mission's chapel was the first church in Pennsylvania dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The mission had already served the area for more than fifty years when that chapel was built.
