About Packwood, Washington
Packwood began as Sulphur Springs. It was soon renamed for Meriwether Lewis and had a post office by 1890. The Postal Service confused it with Fort Lewis. So the town took the name of William Packwood, a Virginian pioneer who explored Oregon and Washington.
In December 1977, excessive rain and snowmelt flooded Packwood. Eight homes washed away, and damaged bridges cut the town off. The Cowlitz River crested twice in the 2025 floods. About 60 people were rescued, partly by Packwood's county fire district. Rebuilding of the eroded riverbank began the following week.
- The first people on the siteThe Upper Cowlitz people once had a large village where Packwood stands today, before the town began. Their members living near Kiona Creek were called the ceq'klama.
