About Paden City, West Virginia

Paden City is a city of 2,541 people on the Ohio River, where State Route 2 runs north from New Martinsville toward Sistersville. The city lies partly in Wetzel County and partly in Tyler County. Obadiah Paden settled here in 1790, and the whole stretch of river land he held became known as Paden's Bottom.

The West Virginia Encyclopedia calls Paden City a glass-making town. Clay in the ground drew a pottery here in 1911, and five years later, in 1916, Paden City was incorporated.

  • Named for Obadiah PadenPaden was born in Pennsylvania in 1755 and became a landowner in this part of the Ohio Valley, where he died in 1822. The city carries his name, and so do Paden Island in the river and Paden Fork nearby.
  • Dishes from local clayJohn Lessel, who came from Europe, founded the Paden City Pottery Company in 1911 and chose the town for its large deposits of clay. At its peak the pottery employed more than 400 people making pottery and sets of dishes. It shut down in 1950, but its dishes still turn up for sale online as vintage dishware.
