About Paia, Hawaii

Paia is a community of 2,470 people in Maui County, on the northern coast of Maui. Its Hawaiian name means "noisy." The Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company ran a sugar mill here from 1880 until 2000, and the cane fields and the mill were the reason the town filled with workers.

Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Filipino immigrants came to Paia to labor in the fields and the mill, and for many of them the plantation camps were their first home in the United States. Before the 1950s, an estimated 6,000 sugar workers lived in more than a dozen camps in and near the town.

  • Maui's first English schoolOn January 17, 1881, Paia School welcomed its first 20 pupils, at a different spot from today's campus. It was the first government school on Maui where every class was taught in English. Enrollment kept climbing, and in the late 1920s and 1930s it peaked at 1,300 students and 43 teachers. Paia School is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • The camps came home in 1985Long after the camps had emptied, former residents held a Grand Paia Reunion in 1985. Some 4,000 to 5,000 people came back for it, and hundreds of them traveled from the mainland.
  • World Capital of WindsurfingPaia sits close to Hoʻokipa and Spreckelsville, windsurfing spots known around the world, so the town is sometimes called "The World Capital of Windsurfing." It's also the first town drivers reach on the Hana Highway headed east toward Hana, and its old main streets now hold restaurants, art galleries and surf shops.
