About Paloma, Illinois

Local producers once shipped pickles to Quincy from a rail stop called Pickleville. Settler Daniel Gooding offered to build a depot if the railroad moved the stop to his new town. The railroad agreed. A conductor's wife found Pickleville unfitting and renamed the community Paloma, Spanish for dove.

Railroad men nicknamed the station Pickle Station, or Pickleville, because of the huge loads of cucumbers shipped from it. Paloma was also a shipping point for livestock and grain. No other station in the county baled and shipped as much hay.
