About Paris, Illinois
Paris is the county seat and largest city in Edgar County, with 8,291 residents counted in the 2020 census. Established in 1826 on land Samuel Vance donated for the county seat, it became an incorporated village in 1849.
- An Oak-Carved NameThe town's name most likely came from "Paris" carved into a jack oak, rather than from the French capital.
- Brothers as MayorsWalter Booth and Newton Booth both served as Paris mayors during the mid-1850s.
- Cooperative High SchoolIn 2009, Paris Cooperative High School became Illinois's first cooperative high school.
