About Park Hill, Oklahoma

Park Hill was home to the original Cherokee Female Seminary, one of the first schools of higher learning built especially to educate women west of the Mississippi River. The seminary was lost to a fire in 1887, but three of its columns still stand on the grounds of the Cherokee Heritage Center. The Cherokee Heritage Center opened on the seminary grounds in 1967. In 2020 the Council of the Cherokee Nation passed an act that transferred the 44-acre campus to the tribe.

Cherokees have lived at Park Hill since at least 1826. Rev. Samuel Newton moved his mission here in 1836 and gave the place its name, and Park Hill grew into one of the leading communities of the Cherokee Nation, home to Principal Chief John Ross, who led the Nation from 1828 until his death in 1866. Chief Ross is buried in the Ross Cemetery at Park Hill, which began in 1842 with the burial of his nephew John McDonald Ross.
