About Pearisburg, Virginia

Pearisburg is a town of 2,909 people and the county seat of Giles County. It sits below Pearis Mountain, with the New River to its north. The town began in 1808, the same year Giles County was created. A local landowner, George Pearis, gave 50 acres so a town could form around the new county courthouse, and the place took his name.

  • Pearis's ferry at Bluff CityBefore he gave land for the town, George Pearis ran a ferry across the New River at a settlement known as Bluff City. That settlement later became part of Pearisburg and now lies within the town's present limits.
  • A log courthouse firstThe county court first met in a temporary log building, which was standing by 1807. Around 1810 a permanent stone courthouse took its place. Pearisburg is still the county seat, and the Giles County Courthouse is listed on the National Register.
  • Where the Appalachian Trail crossesPearis Mountain rises to 3,700 feet southwest of town. The Appalachian Trail comes down the mountain, runs through the western edge of Pearisburg and then crosses the New River.
