This restored linen postcard captures the Perryville Mobile Service station along U.S. Route 40 in Perryville, Maryland, a roadside scene from the great age of the American automobile. Sitting in Cecil County at the head of the Chesapeake Bay, Perryville has long been a crossing point for travelers , U.S. Route 40 was one of the nation's earliest numbered highways, carrying motorists across the country and through small towns just like this one.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, "linen" postcards , printed on textured card stock with bright, saturated inks , became one of America's most beloved ways to remember a place. This edition comes from the work of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose images are preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This card has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL to bring back the vivid life it had when it was new.
