About Peterborough, New Hampshire

Peterborough is a town of 6,418 people in Hillsborough County, built along the Contoocook River in the Monadnock region. Massachusetts made the grant in 1737, and settlers came to stay in 1749. Raids during the French and Indian War struck the young settlement, yet fifty families were living here by 1759. On January 17, 1760, Governor Benning Wentworth incorporated the town and named it for Lieutenant Peter Prescott, a land speculator from Concord, Massachusetts.

Falling water on the Contoocook and Nubanusit Brook turned Peterborough into a mill town. Its first cotton factory started up in 1810. By 1859 the town had 2,222 people, four more cotton factories and a woolen mill, along with an iron foundry, two paper mills, a carriage factory, seven sawmills, three gristmills and a boot and shoe factory.

“Peterborough was clearly the per capita magazine production capital of the world.”

  • A free library in 1833The Reverend Abiel Abbot came in 1827 to lead the Peterborough Unitarian Church, after Connecticut's religious leaders accused him of heresy. He founded the Monadnock Summer Lyceum and the town library, which in 1833 became the nation's first tax-funded free public library. The postmaster lent its books from the general store and post office. It worked so well that in 1849 the legislature let every town raise library money. The books moved to the town hall in 1873.
  • MacDowell begins in 1896Marian MacDowell, a pianist, purchased Hillcrest Farm in 1896 so that she and her husband, the composer Edward MacDowell, would have a summer home. In 1907 she gave the farm to the Edward MacDowell Association to found an artists' colony.
  • Grover's Corners and Grove StreetThornton Wilder stayed at the MacDowell Colony in June 1937, one of the places where he worked on Our Town. The play's Grover's Corners was modeled on Peterborough, and its name seems to come from the town's Grove Street. In Act Three the Stage Manager even says Peterborough's name aloud.
  • Over 100 magazinesDuring the 1980s the publisher Wayne Green brought more than 100 magazines to Peterborough, most of them about computers and technology. Byte and MacComputing were among the titles produced in town.
  • A granite church by CramRalph Adams Cram designed All Saints' Church on Concord Street in 1912, building it from granite quarried nearby in the style of an English country church. He drew partly on St. Mary the Virgin in Iffley, England, and Charles Connick made its stained glass. Its congregation held the first service on August 8, 1920.
