About Pewamo, Michigan

Pewamo is a village of 503 people in Lyons Township, Ionia County. It grew up as a station on the Detroit, Grand Haven and Milwaukee Railway, and that old rail line now carries the Fred Meijer Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee Trail. J.C. Blanchard proposed the village's name to honor Chief Pewamo, a son of the Ojibwa chief Shacoe, after the two had hunted together along the nearby Grand River.

  • Settlers before 1835Franklin Chubb came to Michigan in territorial times, before 1835, and settled on government land just north of where the village now stands. Only two or three families lived in the neighborhood then. His daughter Antoinette, born there in 1835, was the first white girl born in Lyons Township and perhaps the first in the county.
  • A money-order office in 1871Pewamo's post office began handling money orders in August 1871. By 1881 the trains brought in and carried out three mails every day, and a stage line brought one more.
  • A Hollywood strawberry festivalWarner Brothers set the opening of its 1937 musical comedy Mr. Dodd Takes the Air at the Pewamo Strawberry Festival, in the main character's home town. Alfred E. Green directed the film, and its song "Remember Me," by Harry Warren and Al Dubin, was nominated for Best Song at the 10th Academy Awards.
  • A village doctor, 1897 to 1909Dr. John R. Hay came to Ionia County right after earning his medical degree and set up his practice in Pewamo. He treated patients here from 1897 until 1909, when he moved his practice to Saranac.
