About Phelps City, Missouri
Phelps City was laid out in August 1868 on the flat Missouri River bottoms. During the high water of 1881, the whole town was under water. Only a few spots of dry land showed anywhere in the township. By 1882, the town had shrunk from 301 people to about 200.
Soon after the town was laid out, John D. Dopf started the Phelps City Record. Its first issue came out on September 12, 1868. The Republican paper lasted about four months before it closed.
- How the town fadedMissouri River floods in the 2010s hit the town hard, above all the 2019 flood. That flood largely emptied the community. By the 2020 census, nobody lived there.
