About Philadelphia, Mississippi

Philadelphia is a city of 7,118 people and the county seat of Neshoba County, in east-central Mississippi. An early county history counted just 55 residents here in 1900. The town took its present name in 1903, honoring Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and two years later the railroad arrived and brought new business with it.

Charles Evers organized the Philadelphia chapter of the NAACP in 1956. In June 1964 three civil rights workers, James Chaney of Meridian and Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner of New York, disappeared while looking into the burning of Mount Zion Methodist Church outside town. Klan members, among them Neshoba County deputy sheriff Cecil Price, had released them from jail, killed them and buried them in an earthen dam, where an FBI search later found them. National anger over the killings helped win passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and in 2005 Edgar Ray Killen was convicted of manslaughter.

“Philadelphia will always be connected to what happened here in 1964, but the fact that Philadelphia, Mississippi, with its notorious past, could elect a black man as mayor, it might be time to quit picking on Philadelphia, Mississippi.”

He beat Rayburn Waddell, who had held the office for three terms, by 46 votes in the Democratic primary, and no Republican ran against him. Young took office on July 3, 2009, and served until 2025, when he lost the Democratic primary.
  • Marcus Dupree's hometownMarcus Dupree starred in football at Philadelphia High School, then went on to the University of Oklahoma and later to the USFL and NFL. The Courting of Marcus Dupree, a 1983 book by Willie Morris, tells how his talent drew scouts to rural Mississippi and helped ease racial divisions. Dupree later built the Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Philadelphia.
  • The EF5 tornado of 2011On April 27, 2011, during the Super Outbreak, an EF5 tornado with winds reaching 205 mph tore across the northern part of town. Three people died. It was the first tornado of that strength to hit Mississippi in 45 years, and one of two EF5 storms in the state that day; the other struck Smithville.
