About Piermont, New York

Piermont is a village of 2,517 people in Rockland County, on the west bank of the Hudson River in the town of Orangetown. Sparkill Creek breaks through the north end of the Palisades here, and that gap made the small landing, known as Tappan Landing or Tappan Slote, the first Hudson port serving southern Orange County.

The same valley gave the Erie Railroad an easy path for its first line, which ran east from Suffern to the river. In 1839 the railroad built a pier reaching nearly a mile out to the deep channel, where barges carried freight on to New York City. Eleazar Lord, the railroad's first president, then renamed the village Piermont, joining the pier with the mountain where he was building his country estate.

  • Washington's 17-gun saluteIn 1783, as the Revolutionary War ended, George Washington met Sir Guy Carleton, the British commander in America. He dined aboard Carleton's ship, HMS Perseverance, anchored off the Onderdonk House, a patriot home that British ships had once fired upon. When Washington came aboard, the British greeted him with a 17-gun salute, the first such recognition of the new nation.
  • Last Stop USADuring World War II the federal government took over the Erie pier, lengthened it and improved it. Soldiers marched from nearby Camp Shanks out to its end, where boats waited to carry them toward Europe. Nearly 1.3 million soldiers passed this way, and the village earned the name Last Stop USA. A memorial plaque on the pier now marks that history.
  • A drawbridge cranked by handThe King Iron Bridge Company of Cleveland, Ohio, built the Sparkill Creek Drawbridge in 1880. Fishermen sailing the creek would climb off their sloops, crank the bridge up, pass through, then crank it back down for traffic. Crews later took it apart piece by piece and restored it, and it was dedicated again on August 7, 2009. No other drawbridge in Rockland County is worked by hand, and it now carries walkers to Tallman Mountain State Park.
  • The 1873 station on Ash StreetPiermont Railroad Station, built in 1873 in the Victorian Stick style, served the Erie's Northern Branch between Nyack and Jersey City until trains stopped running through the village in 1966. In 2006 the Piermont Historical Society brought the outside back to its first look, with French gray, light green and oxide red paint, a new roof and a 9-foot cupola. It joined the National Register that same year.
  • A village in fictionWoody Allen's 1984 film The Purple Rose of Cairo takes place in Piermont. The novelist William Gaddis lived here while he wrote J R (1975), and his house became the setting for his next novel, Carpenter's Gothic (1985).
