About Pilot Rock, Oregon
From the 1882 Umatilla County history: "The little town of Pilot Rock lies at the base of the Blue mountains, on Birch creek, sixteen miles from Pendleton. Its name is derived from a large bluff of basaltic rock bearing the same title, which serves as a land mark and guide for miles."
