About Plainfield, Vermont
Early names for the village included Mud Hollow, Slab Holler and Mill Privilege. Settler John Chapman suggested naming it after his hometown of Plainfield, New Hampshire. To win support, he offered to give the town leather-bound record books. Plainfield became an incorporated town in 1867.
