About Plainsboro Center, New Jersey

Plainsboro Center is a community of 2,760 people in Plainsboro Township, Middlesex County, about 5 miles east of Princeton. A century ago, decisions about Plainsboro's schools rested with Cranbury voters, and the village's pupils took their lessons in a second-story room of a rented building.

In 1918 those voters were asked to spend $12,000 on a new two-room school house for Plainsboro, and they said no, 241 to 111. John Van Buren Wicoff and his neighbors responded by forming a township of their own so they could control their children's schooling. The state approved Plainsboro Township on April 1, 1919, the public endorsed it on May 6 with only two votes against, and the cornerstone of the new school went down that December.

  • John Van Buren WicoffWicoff was a locally prominent attorney, politician and banker, and after Cranbury voters rejected the new school, he led the effort that created Plainsboro Township in 1919. His house stands at 641 Plainsboro Road.
  • Between two brooksPlainsboro Pond, on Cranbury Brook, marks the southern edge of the community, and Devils Brook runs just to the north. Both brooks flow west into the Millstone River, which belongs to the Raritan River watershed.
  • Its largest count yetThe 2020 census found 2,760 people in Plainsboro Center, 48 more than the 2,712 counted in 2010 and the highest total it has ever recorded.
