Plantation Structure in McClellanville, SC (1797) Photo
This vintage photograph captures a plantation structure located in McClellanville, Charleston County, South Carolina. Built in 1797, the building remained unoccupied for several decades due to unforeseen circumstances affecting its heirs. It was not until 1858 that Stephen D. Doar purchased the property, making it home to three generations of the Doar family.
The architectural features of the plantation include elegant columns, fanlights, and a prominent portico, all characteristic of Southern plantation design. Surrounding the structure, lush shrubs and climbing vines add to the historical ambiance of the setting. This image is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, which aims to document significant buildings and their architectural styles in the Southern United States.
This photograph serves as a valuable piece of history, reflecting the architectural heritage of the Carolina Low Country. It was published in 1938 in the book Plantations of the Carolina Low Country by Samuel Gaillard Stoney.
