About Pleasant Grove, Alabama
Pleasant Grove is a city of 9,544 people in western Jefferson County, part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. David Brown, its first settler, arrived around 1836, and the land here was first homesteaded in September of that year. By the 1880 census the area held 74 people and had come to be called Pleasant Grove, though no one is sure how it got the name.
For decades the families here lived by farming. That changed in 1916, when the area's first coal mine opened, and the local economy soon came to rest on the mines. The city grew out of four communities, Cottage Hill, Frog Pond, Lizard Ridge and the original Pleasant Grove.
“Residents would sometimes go to their well to draw water only to find there was none. The water had gone into the mines.”
- Incorporated on January 16, 1934Pleasant Grove was established in 1889 but went without a city government for decades. The deep coal mines under the town drained its wells, and in the 1930s a federal program would pay for local water systems only in incorporated communities. So the residents incorporated, the town built its new water system, and W.P. Stone became the first appointed mayor.
- Four large tornadoesLarge tornadoes damaged the city in 1956, 1977, 1998 and 2011. The worst struck on April 27, 2011, when a storm tore through Pleasant Grove, wrecked many homes and killed 10 people.
- Milk CreekPleasant Grove's Milk Creek takes its name from the water itself, which is creamy white in color and thick in texture.
- A high school built in 1970Pleasant Grove High School opened in 1970 and was joined with the junior high, and the state of Alabama accredited the schools in May 1973. A new high school building was finished in 2010, and the old one became the JCIB Middle School.
