About Poetry, Texas

Poetry is a Texas town centered at Farm to Market Roads 986 and 1565, about six miles north of Terrell. First called Turner's Point, the settlement gained a post office and school in 1858. Local merchant Maston Ussery proposed its present name in 1876, inspired by the countryside in spring.

  • Land PatentPresident Anson Jones granted Elisha Turner a league and a labor of land on July 22, 1845, for his Republic of Texas service.
  • Post Office MovesThe post office shifted from Turner's Point to Poetry in 1879, then closed in 1905 when service was consolidated in Terrell.
  • Fire and ChurchesA fire destroyed the business district on October 27, 1924, while the community's churches survived.
  • Historic Burial GroundsCampground Cemetery adjoins the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, while Dry Creek Cemetery near Turner's Point holds graves of many area pioneers.
  • Incorporation EffortsResidents approved incorporation in 1984, but county commissioners invalidated it on technical grounds; voters again supported incorporation in 2020.
