About Poloa, American Samoa
Two large tsunami waves struck Poloa in 2009. A village chief, or matai, saw them coming and warned everyone to flee. Nearly all residents escaped, and one person died. The waves badly damaged almost every building, and FEMA led the rebuilding.
From the National Register nomination: "Completed in 1941, in anticipation of a Japanese amphibious invasion of the islands of American Samoa, the defensive fortifications at Poloa were part of a comprehensive, island-wide buildup of coastal installations by the U. S. Marines during World War II."
