About Port Colden, New Jersey
Port Colden is a village of 260 people in Washington Township, Warren County. It began in 1831, the year workers finished the Morris Canal, and the village grew up along the new waterway. For the 2010 census it was also made a census-designated place, so the Census Bureau now counts its people on their own.
- Named for Cadwallader D. ColdenThe village took its name from Cadwallader D. Colden, who served as president of the Morris Canal and Banking Company, the firm behind the canal. The word port pointed to its place on the canal.
- Boats, bricks and a distilleryIn its canal years Port Colden built boats and made bricks, and John Opdyke ran a distillery here for many years. By 1911 the county history wrote of all three as industries of the past.
