About Portage Township, Mackinac County, Michigan
John Lee became the first white settler near Curtis in 1884. He lived among the Chippewa, and for 18 months he shared a hut with Chief Saw-Naw-Quato. In 1886 the federal government granted land to Lee and several Chippewa members. Lee settled on the shore of South Manistique Lake, and relatives and other settlers followed.
A railroad line reached Curtis in 1907, and builders put up cottages and resorts, hoping for a lumber boom. The railroad abandoned its depot in 1910. By 1913 only 25 people remained, and they turned to farming and fishing.
