About Portland, Iowa

After the railroad put in a side track here, A. S. Felt laid out town lots in 1878 and named the village Portland. He also planted many shade trees along the streets. A. W. Mullan opened the first store in October 1879. When fire destroyed it, he soon rebuilt.

The Portland Cheese Factory, built in 1879 by James Parker, was among the leading businesses in Cerro Gordo County. A. S. Felt gave the site and the stone, plus labor and cash worth about 1,000 dollars. The limestone building stood on Lime Creek, near the Portland Mills.
