About Pottersville, New York
Pottersville took its name from Joel F. Potter, the first businessman in the village. His efforts started the growth that built up the community. He built a store here in 1839. It stood until a fire destroyed it in 1876.
The Faxton family started the Pottersville Fair in 1877. Gambling and drinking bankrupted it within a few years. A fair association brought it back in 1910. The 1913 fair drew about 7,000 people. Crowds watched 400 automobiles parade, an ox race and a contortionist.
- A natural record in the hamletNatural Stone Bridge and Caves draws visitors to the hamlet. Its marble cave opening ranks as the largest in the eastern United States.
