About Proctor, Texas

Proctor is a community of 93 people in eastern Comanche County, Texas, about twelve miles northeast of the town of Comanche on U.S. Highway 377. Thomas O. Moore founded it in 1872, after he moved west hoping to improve his health. He went into business with his friend Alexander Watson Proctor and sent him on ahead to put up a store building.

Moore bought goods for the store, shipped them by rail as far as Waco and hauled them the rest of the way by wagon. Local people soon called the little settlement Mooresville. In the early 1890s the whole settlement moved to a new site so it could sit beside the new Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railroad line.

  • From Camden to ProctorThe spot where the railroad stopped was called Camden at first, then renamed Proctor. Surveyors laid out a new townsite of about thirty-eight blocks, and lots went on sale in 1891, a year after the Proctor post office reopened.
  • Named for a business partnerAlexander Watson Proctor was Thomas Moore's friend and partner, the man who went ahead to build their store at the first settlement. When the town moved to the railroad, it took his name.
  • Boom years, then declineProctor flourished in the early 20th century but began to decline by the 1930s. It remains unincorporated, with its own post office under ZIP code 76468, and its children attend the Comanche Independent School District.
