About Pulaski, Illinois

Pulaski is a village of 154 people in Pulaski County, in the basin of the Cache River, with Cairo to the south. It started in 1852 as a camp for the crews building the Illinois Central Railroad. Three years later the settlement became a real town on paper, when its plat was recorded on March 28, 1855, in Section 15, Township 15, Range 1 west.

  • Named for Casimir PulaskiThe village, like the county around it, carries the name of Count Casimir Pulaski, the Polish patriot who fought on the American side in the Revolutionary War.
  • A post office in 1856A post office opened here in 1856, the year after the plat was recorded, so the new railroad settlement had its own mail service.
  • Camp Pulaski until 1872Because the town grew out of a railroad work camp, it was first known as Camp Pulaski. The word Camp was dropped from the name in 1872, and Pulaski was incorporated as a village in 1898.
