About Pulaski, Michigan

Pulaski is a township of 1,883 people in the southwest corner of Jackson County, where it meets Calhoun and Hillsdale counties. Two branches of the Kalamazoo River, the North and the South, drain its farmland. Allen W. Grover came from Monroe County, New York, in June 1836 and settled with his father in section 11, and Curtis D. Dixon arrived with his parents in July 1837 to work an 80-acre farm his father had bought in section 12.

Within a year the settlers had a government of their own. In April 1838 voters organized the township and elected James Cross as supervisor and Warner I. Hodge as town clerk. By 1881 the supervisor was Thomas Goffe Jr., who was born in neighboring Hanover Township in 1838, moved to Pulaski in 1862 and had held the office for four years.

  • Off to Pike's Peak in 1859William Butters, born in Lincolnshire, England, moved to the township in 1853. In March 1859 the gold rush pulled him west to Pike's Peak, but the trip didn't pay, so he came back to his 100-acre farm in sections 16 and 21. He later served several years as Pulaski's postmaster.
  • Shorthorns on government landJ. W. Clark was born in Pulaski on Nov. 13, 1839, on 160 acres of government land his father had settled. He inherited the home place, by then 170 acres, built a new house on it in 1862 and served about a year in the 2d Michigan Cavalry starting in November 1863. By 1881 he had spent six years breeding shorthorn cattle, some of the finest in the state.
