About Pungoteague, Virginia
On August 27, 1665, Pungoteague hosted the first theatrical performance in Virginia. After Edward Martin complained, actors Cornelius Wilkinson, Phillip Howard, and William Derby were ordered into court. They came in costume and presented their lines. The men were cleared of immorality, and Martin was fined.
For some years, Accomack County's justices held court at John Cole's tavern in Pungoteague. Cole charged nothing for its use, since court days brought him customers. In 1677, the county decided to build a courthouse. Cole offered thirty thousand bricks and all the timber, but his offer was not accepted.
