About Quail, Texas
Quail is a small town of 17 people in Collingsworth County, where State Highway 203 crosses Farm Road 1574, about 14.2 miles northwest of Wellington, the county seat. The town was named for the many quail that lived in the surrounding country.
Brothers W. I. and T. S. Atkinson brought the first families to this area in November 1890 and lived in dugouts on their homesteads. They were the first farmers in Collingsworth County to raise cotton, and by 1904 Quail had a cotton gin of its own.
“The grieving parents donated land for a cemetery, and their son was the first to be buried here.”
- A post office in 1902Quail got its own post office in 1902, with Sam Wilson as its first postmaster. Two years later, by 1904, the settlers had put up the community's first school building.
- A busy year in 1904In 1904 Greer Powell opened a cotton gin in Quail, and the town's first store opened its doors. That same year, residents ran a telephone line to Wellington by stringing the wire along a barbed wire fence.
- 17 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 17 people in Quail, down from 19 in 2010. Children from Quail attend school in the Hedley Independent School District, and Hedley lies 16 miles to the west.
