About Quay, Oklahoma

Quay is a community of 39 people on the line between Pawnee and Payne counties in Oklahoma. It began as Lawson, named for Stonewall J. Lawson, who owned the townsite, and its post office opened on January 17, 1894. On February 24, 1903, the post office took the name Quay to honor Matthew Quay, a U.S. senator from Pennsylvania.

Farming carried the town in its early years. Two years after Oklahoma became a state in 1907, about one hundred people lived in Quay, and they had a cotton gin, a grain elevator, a bank and a public school. Then oil was found nearby, and in the 1910s and 1920s Quay grew into a boom town of perhaps four thousand people. When the oil gave out, most of them left, and the 1930 census counted 186.

  • The end of Bill DoolinIn 1896, when the town still went by Lawson, a posse led by the lawman Heck Thomas killed the outlaw Bill Doolin here.
  • From boom town to quietQuay lost its post office in 1957 and its school in 1965. It was still a town of 47 people at the 2000 census, but it gave up its incorporation on August 23, 2000. The 2020 census counted 39 residents.
