About Quinnesec, Michigan

Quinnesec was the oldest town on the Menominee Range. John L. Buell laid it out in 1877, when the land was still wilderness. At first no one dared join him, and the town seemed sure to die. After the iron ore proved valuable and a railroad was promised, it grew at once.

The name Quinnesec comes from a Native word meaning where the river forms smoke. The village got the name because of the falls in the Menominee River at this spot.

  • First ore shipped from the rangeIn the winter and spring of 1873 and 1874, Buell hauled the first ore mined on the range to Menominee. He moved it by sleigh and wagon, about seventy miles in all. Fifty-three tons made the trip.
