About Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico
Ranchos de Taos is a community of 2,707 people in Taos County, about four miles southwest of Taos. In 1725 the place first known as Las Trampas de Taos took root for good as a Spanish settlement under the name Ranchos de Taos. People also called it the Taos "Old Town."
Spanish settlers in the Taos Valley lived under the threat of raids by Plains Indians. In 1760 Comanches struck the settlement, killed its men and carried off 50 women from the fortified house of the Vidalpando family. For safety, settlers of the valley moved into Taos Pueblo, and in 1772 work began on a mission church.
- A mission church on the plazaFranciscans oversaw the building of the San Francisco de Assisi Mission Church, a Spanish Colonial church made of adobe, between 1772 and 1816. It sits in the middle of the village plaza, and the Ranchos de Taos Plaza, with the church at its heart, is on the National Register as a historic district.
- New mud every JuneAdobe needs care, so each June the people of Ranchos de Taos, members of the parish and visitors gather for two weeks. Together they spread a fresh layer of mud mixed with straw over the outside walls of the mission church.
- Ansel Adams and Georgia O'KeeffeThe church drew two of America's best-known artists. Ansel Adams took pictures of it for an art book about Taos Pueblo, while Georgia O'Keeffe came back to the building many times, painting it in a series of views from different sides.
- Land for 63 familiesIn 1796 and 1797, 63 Spanish families received parcels of the Don Fernando de Taos Land Grant. Mexico handed out more grants between 1821 and 1846, and they helped the population of the Taos region grow.
