About Randolph, Tennessee
In its early days, Randolph was a rival to Memphis. In 1830 it was the most important shipping point in West Tennessee. Davy Crockett hoped to dig a canal that would bring Hatchie River crops here. His plan failed, and a new post road through Memphis gave that city the advantage.
The town was named for John Randolph, a Virginia leader in Congress. In the mid-1830s, steamboats carried up to 40,000 bales of cotton a year from its landing. Randolph sent out more cotton than Memphis did until 1840.
