About Ranger, Texas

Ranger is an Eastland County city whose name recalls a Texas Rangers camp established nearby in the 1870s. The railroad drew residents from Ranger Camp Valley to a permanent town in 1880, and oil transformed the community after the McClesky No. 1 well began producing in October 1917. The 2020 census recorded 2,300 residents.

  • Railroad BeginningsAfter the Texas and Pacific Railway laid tracks west of Ranger Camp Valley in 1880, residents relocated beside the line and established Ranger.
  • Oil BoomThe McClesky No. 1 produced 1,700 barrels daily in October 1917, beginning a major oil boom in Ranger and Eastland County.
  • Peak PopulationThe 1920 census counted 16,201 people, though Ranger may have held 30,000 residents at the boom's height.
  • Roaring Ranger MuseumThe chamber of commerce founded the Roaring Ranger Museum in 1982 to present the community's oil-boom history.
  • Historic AirfieldRanger Antique Airfield dates to 1911, and Amelia Earhart landed there in a Pitcairn Autogyro in 1931.
