About Ransom, Illinois

Ransom is a village of 308 people in LaSalle County, at the center of Allen Township. It was planned from the start. As early as 1876, ads in the Streator Monitor invited shopkeepers, craftsmen and tradesmen to come and open businesses here, and the village incorporated in 1885. Its first businesses included a hotel, a saloon, a grocery, a pharmacy, a blacksmith, a carpenter, a doctor and a cash exchange.

In 1892 a fire destroyed the east side of the business district, and some owners closed their doors for good. The loss slowed the young village, but after much debate it built a public waterworks in 1896. Ransom grew again in the years after the fire, and its population peaked at around 600 after World War II.

  • Named for a Civil War generalThe village took its name from General Thomas E. G. Ransom, an Illinois officer in the Civil War. He was born in Vermont but spent his young adult years in Illinois.
  • A town that paid for schoolsThe railroad station went near the center of Section 16, land that luckily was still unsold when the line was located. The School Trustees laid out the town on it, and the first sale of lots brought in $5,000 to help support the schools.
  • The 68-foot water towerRansom's first water tower was a small wooden one at the edge of the business district. The 68-foot tower at the center of the 1896 waterworks replaced it as the heart of the village's water system, and the Ransom Water Tower joined the National Register in 1990.
  • Phones in 1903, streetlights in 1910Telephone service reached Ransom on September 7, 1903, and two years later, in 1905, AT&T began sending telegrams from an office in the village. Over the next five years the village laid sidewalks, and on May 7, 1910, it lit a dozen electric street lamps bought from Illinois Valley Gas and Electric. Electric power then spread into the village's homes.
  • A father and daughter's post officeA 1932 collection of LaSalle County stories credits Mr. Wagoner and his daughter Carrie with starting the first post office in Ransom.
