About Red Springs, North Carolina

Red Springs is a town of 3,087 people in Robeson County. One of its first settlers was "Sailor Hector" McNeill, who already went by that nickname on the Bladen County tax lists of 1771. In 1775 he received a royal land grant from King George III that covered the ground where the town later grew. He and his wife Mary lie in unmarked graves on the edge of the McNeill cemetery, near the hilltop where their home stood.

By the mid-1800s visitors came here in summer for the mineral springs. In June 1884 the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway built a line through the community, and a post office called Dora opened around then. A year later the post office was renamed Red Springs for the rusty color of the spring water. Hamilton McMillan, a legislator who lived here, pushed to incorporate the town in 1887, and on February 17, 1906, fire destroyed a large part of downtown.

  • Hotels for the springsAround 1852 Malcolm McNiell, the grandson of Sailor Hector, opened a hotel for the vacationers drawn by the springs. It stayed open until S. R. Townsend built a new hotel in 1891.
  • Music school from 1896From 1896 to 1915 Red Springs was home to the Southern Conservatory of Music, which attracted girls from across the nation, and to a military school for boys. The boys' school shut its doors long ago. The conservatory became Flora McDonald College, and its successor, Flora McDonald Academy, still operates as a private day school.
  • Champions in 1948 and 1949The Red Springs Red Robins played minor league ball here from 1947 to 1950 as a farm club of the Philadelphia Athletics. They won the Tobacco State League title in 1948 and took another in 1949 behind pitcher Bill Harrington, who later reached the Athletics himself. Ducky Detweiler, once of the Boston Braves, served as player and manager for the 1950 team.
  • The Twins' one seasonIn 1969 the Minnesota Twins moved their Class A club from Wilson, N.C., to Red Springs. Managed by Tom Umphlett, a former major leaguer from North Carolina, the team drew more than 40,000 fans and carried six future major leaguers. It played only that single season, and Sports Illustrated wrote about it.
