About Redrock, New Mexico

Redrock is a farming community in Grant County, set on the Gila River along New Mexico State Road 464, about 27.3 miles west-southwest of Silver City. The 2020 census counted 3 residents. Its mail once came by a route out of Lordsburg, and in 1935 the county school board sent the WPA a proposal for a new schoolhouse here.

  • Mail by way of LordsburgIn 1886 the Lordsburg post office opened a mail route to Gold Hill. When Redrock got a post office of its own, Lordsburg added a second route to carry mail to the new office on the Gila.
  • A New Deal schoolhouseOn September 11, 1935, Grant County's Board of Education sent the WPA a proposal to build a new school at Redrock. Through that summer and fall the board drew up similar plans for rural districts scattered across the county. The Living New Deal records the building today as the former Redrock School.
