About Redstone, Colorado

Redstone is a community of 127 people in Pitkin County, Colorado. Industrialist John Cleveland Osgood founded it in the late 19th century as part of his coal mining business, and the same venture led to the building of the Crystal River Railroad. From 1892 to 1903, Osgood was at the head of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company, and he treated Redstone as his own project, meant to set an example for the whole industry.

Osgood called the town an experiment in "enlightened industrial paternalism." His miners and coke workers got 84 cottages and a 40-room inn, each wired for electricity and fitted with indoor plumbing. The town also had a modern bathhouse, a school and a club house that held a library and a theater. Most of those Swiss-style cottages from the Craftsman era are still lived in today.

  • No strike in 1903Osgood's care for his workers had a purpose, and it worked. When the United Mine Workers called a strike in 1903, the miners of Redstone refused to join it. The Colorado Encyclopedia counts a community garden, a hydroelectric plant and a reservoir among the comforts the company town gave them.
  • Designed by Theodore BoalMuch of Redstone came from the drawing board of architect Theodore Boal. The Redstone Historic District, listed on both the National and State Register, survives today as a major body of his work.
  • The Redstone InnThe 40-room inn that Osgood built for his workers is listed on the National Register on its own as the Redstone Inn. It now runs as a resort, open to guests all year.
  • 170 inches of snowRedstone has warm summers with cool nights. Its winters are cold, and snowfall averages 170 inches a year.
