About Reidsville, Georgia

Reidsville is a city of 2,515 people and the seat of Tattnall County. The town got its start in about 1828, and four years later, in 1832, the Georgia General Assembly chose it as the county seat. Reidsville was incorporated as a town in 1838 and became a city in 1905.

  • Named for Robert R. ReidThe town takes its name from Robert R. Reid, who served as territorial governor of Florida.
  • German prisoners in onion fieldsDuring World War II, Reidsville held at least one camp for captured German soldiers, and some reports say two. The prisoners worked in the area's onion fields. The camp is thought to have stood on the city's edge, near today's gas station and self-storage business, where digs have turned up German artifacts. Houses now stand nearby, so no one is sure whether the finds mark the camp or a field where prisoners worked.
  • Georgia State PrisonThe Georgia Department of Corrections ran the Georgia State Prison just outside Reidsville, in unincorporated Tattnall County. The prison closed in 2022.
