About Rexland Acres, California
Rexland Acres is an unincorporated community of 3,563 people in Kern County. It sits along Union Avenue, roughly 5 miles south of Bakersfield's downtown. Today its streets are lined with homes, but in the boyhood of a future state senator, farm crops surrounded the neighborhood. Most of those fields were planted in cotton, and local children could find summer work in them.
- Picking cotton at elevenOmer Rains and his family lived in Rexland Acres for about three years. The summer he was eleven, he went out to the cotton fields around the neighborhood and started picking cotton. He later served California as a State Senator and told the story in his 2012 memoir, Back to the Summit.
- The bus to Greenfield ElementaryGreenfield Elementary School was the nearest school to Rexland Acres, so a bus picked young Omer Rains up every morning to take him there. He became the school's student body president, and that was why he made sure to stay at Greenfield for his final year.
- Nearly surrounded by BakersfieldThe city of Bakersfield wraps around almost all of Rexland Acres. Only a small unincorporated area to the northwest keeps the community from being completely enclosed by the city.
