About Richfield, Illinois
Richfield is an unincorporated community of 26 people in Adams County, east of Payson, and it gives its name to Richfield Township around it. The village was laid out in 1842 about four miles north of the county line. Nahma Tyler opened its first store a few years later, and Richfield has kept the same quiet standing ever since, a platted village that never took the step of incorporating.
- Platted in 1842Richfield's lots were surveyed and mapped in 1842 in the township that shares its name. By 1919 the county history noted that the village had still never been incorporated, and it remains an unincorporated community today.
- Nahma Tyler's storeAround 1845 Nahma Tyler built the first store in Richfield, giving the families of the new village a place to trade close to home instead of traveling to a larger town.
- Payson schoolsRichfield's students attend Payson Community Unit School District 1, and they go on to high school at Payson-Seymour High School in the neighboring town to the west.
