About Richmond, Vermont

Richmond is a town of 4,167 people in Chittenden County, where the Winooski River runs through the western foothills of the Green Mountains. Amos Brownson and John Chamberlain tried to settle here in 1775 but left that fall. They returned in the spring of 1784, after the Revolutionary War had ended. The General Assembly then created the town on October 27, 1794, from pieces of Jericho, Williston and Huntington, and Matthew Cole went to the legislature in 1795 as its first representative.

Mills on the Winooski and the Huntington River powered local shops that made wagons, harnesses, tinware, brass, cabinet work and woodenware, and by 1859 the town held 1,453 people. In 1900 residents offered money to attract new industry, and the Richmond Underwear Company put up a two-story factory on Millet Street in seven months. It was Richmond's first building with electric power and steam heat. With 300 workers it set off a building boom, and it ran until 1946.

  • The sixteen-sided Round ChurchWilliam Rhodes of Claremont, New Hampshire, built the Round Church in 1812 and 1813 for the town and five Protestant congregations, paying for it by selling pews. The congregations left one by one, but town meetings were held there until 1973. The society restored it in 1980 and 1981, and it became a National Historic Landmark in 1996.
  • Olympic gold in 1972In 1961 Mickey and Ginny Cochran opened a small ski area on their own hillside beside the Winooski. In 1998 Cochran's Ski Area turned into a nonprofit so that local families could keep affording to ski.
  • The Checkered House BridgeAfter the 1927 flood, Vermont rebuilt 1,600 bridges in three years. The Winooski River Bridge, which carries Route 2 over the river in western Richmond, went up in 1929. Locals call it the Checkered House Bridge, and it had the longest single span in that whole program. Vermont counts only five Pennsylvania truss bridges, and this is one of them.
  • A senator's birthplaceGeorge F. Edmunds was born on a farm on Route 2. He represented Vermont as a United States senator from 1866 to 1891, and for two of those years he was president pro tempore. His birthplace is now the M. S. Whitcomb Farm, whose three-story bank barn with a monitor roof was built in 1901.
