About Richton Park, Illinois
Richton Park is a village of 12,775 people in Cook County, a south suburb of Chicago. It grew up along the Sauk Trail, a route that several Native American tribes followed when they traveled. By the 1840s German migrants had settled near the trail and started a small farming community.
The Illinois Central Railroad reached the area in 1852. Developers then built a depot where the tracks crossed the Sauk Trail and laid out a small farm village around it. The village took its name from Richton, Vermont, the home a first settler had left behind.
- End of the line in 1926When the Illinois Central switched its suburban trains to electric power in 1926, Richton became the final stop. Trains still stop at the Richton Park station on the Metra Electric District, heading south to University Park and north to Chicago's Millennium Station.
- A rink on HBORich City Skate, once known as Olympic Skate World, appeared in the HBO documentary United Skates, a film about African American roller skating rinks.
- Two high schools in townSouthland College Preparatory Charter High School stands in the village, and Rich Township High School runs its Fine Arts and Communications Campus here as well. Matteson School District 162 keeps its headquarters here, and Richton Park has had its own public library district since 1972.
- The tornado of 2008An EF2 tornado hit parts of Richton Park during the evening of June 7, 2008, damaging homes and businesses.
