About Riga, New York

Riga is a town of 5,586 people in western Monroe County, 15 miles southwest of downtown Rochester. In the 18th century, Native Americans deeded its land to Phelps and Gorham as part of the Mill Seat Tract. Robert Morris of Philadelphia soon bought the ground, and he resold it to the Pulteney estate, which belonged to Sir William Pulteney, an Englishman.

At first the area belonged to Ontario County, which the State Legislature set up in 1789, and it later passed to Genesee County. In those years Northampton was the earliest town organized in the whole region from the Genesee River west to Lake Erie, and Riga's land fell inside it.

  • From Pulteney to RigaIn 1802 Northampton was divided into six towns: Batavia, Leicester, Northampton, Southampton, and a pair called East and West Pulteney. The last two carried the name of Sir William Pulteney, whose estate owned the land. In 1808 they were renamed East and West Riga, and a year later, in 1809, the town of Riga was formed.
  • Said RYE-gaPeople in Riga say the name RYE-ga. That sets it apart from the capital of Latvia, which is pronounced REE-ga.
