About Ringgold, Texas

Ringgold is an unincorporated community of 146 people in Montague County, about 20 miles northwest of the county seat at Montague. The town began in 1892, when the Rock Island Line laid track through the area and landowner Joe Harris started selling parcels of land near the new railroad.

A post office opened that same year, and a school followed the next year. It joined several businesses and a church that served an estimated 300 residents. Because two rail lines crossed at Ringgold, the town quickly became the market center for the surrounding area, and by the mid-1920s it had grown to about 400 people.

  • Once called HarrisoniaJoe Harris, the landowner who sold the first town lots, at first named the place Harrisonia after himself. He later changed the name to Ringgold to honor his wife's family, and the new name stuck.
  • Where two railroads metRinggold grew at the junction of two rail lines. That crossing made it the place where people from the nearby countryside came to trade, and the town reached its largest size, around 400 residents, in the mid-1920s.
  • The wildfire of 2006On January 1, 2006, a wildfire swept into Ringgold, burned 32 homes and destroyed about half the town. Television and newspaper reporters from the Dallas and Fort Worth area covered the disaster widely.
  • Ringgold Elementary SchoolThe town keeps one school of its own, Ringgold Elementary School. Older students travel to nearby Stoneburg, home of the consolidated Gold-Burg ISD, or they may choose to attend school in Nocona.
