About Ripley, California
Ripley was founded in 1920, when the California Southern Railroad reached it from Blythe. The townsite was named for Edward Payson Ripley, a former Santa Fe Railway president. The town hoped to become a resort. That hope ended in 1922, when a flood swept part of the valley and damaged the town.
Early Ripley built a hotel that cost 100,000 dollars. It was made of reinforced concrete and stood two stories tall. Upstairs were thirty-two guest rooms, each with running water. Screened sleeping porches let the building hold 150 guests. Electricity heated it, and electric fans cooled it.
