About Ripley, Mississippi

Ripley is a city of 5,462 people and the county seat of Tippah County, in the hill country of northeastern Mississippi near the Tennessee border. The county was carved from land the Chickasaw gave up in 1832, and Ripley was platted in 1835. It became an incorporated town in 1837.

The town stayed small through the 1800s, with 653 people in 1900 and an estimated 900 by 1906. In those years Ripley held the courthouse and jail, a high school and five churches. The Tishomingo Savings Institution opened in 1897, the Bank of Ripley followed in 1904, and local workers ran a saw and planing mill, a cotton gin, a brick plant and a stave factory.

  • A narrow gauge line in 1872Col. William C. Falkner came up with the idea for the Ripley Railroad and served as its president. The line was finished in 1872 and carried trains from Ripley north to Middleton, Tennessee, and it was said to be the first narrow gauge railroad in the United States. It later became part of the Mobile, Jackson & Kansas City Railroad.
  • The real Colonel SartorisFalkner was a novelist, business leader and military man who lived in Ripley in the middle and late 1800s. His great-grandson, the author William Faulkner, used Falkner's adventures around Ripley as the model for the character Colonel John Sartoris. Each November, Ripley's Faulkner Festival offers a walking tour of Faulkner sites.
  • First Monday Trade Day since 1893Traders first gathered on the old square in 1893 to buy, sell and haggle. The event grew into one of the country's longest-running open-air flea markets, and it now meets the weekend before the first Monday of each month. Its grounds sit south of town on Highway 15, facing the Tippah County Fair Grounds.
  • The Southern Sentinel, 1878Capt. Thomas Spight started the Southern Sentinel, a Democratic weekly, on May 1, 1878. Spight went on to represent the Second District in Congress, and under its later editor, A. C. Anderson, the paper was counted among the leading newspapers in that part of the state.
